The Problem
It’s not debatable. Water is the most precious resource in the world. Unfortunately, we don’t have control over the network of pipes that supplies our drinking water, and we certainly don't have control over the hardness of the water that is piped into our homes. Water containing a lot of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron is referred to as hard water. The higher the mineral loading the harder your water and the more problems you will be experiencing. The quickest way to know if your water is hard is to try and lather soap. If it doesn’t lather up, your water is hard and if it lathers easily the water is soft. Left untreated, hard water will deposit on pipes, hot water heating elements, sinks, taps, shower screens and other appliances around the house. Fixing these problems is not cheap!
The water authorities don’t have to treat water hardness. They just make sure that when the water leaves the water treatment facility it is clean, free of bacteria, and there is enough chlorine in the water so that the house at the end of the line has a chlorine residual when they do their water test. It’s up to you to take care of the high mineral water causing your hard water problems.
Don’t procrastinate. The longer you let hard water affect your home the more it will cost in the long run. Scale easily builds up on pipes and continues to build up until there is little to no flow. Similarly, taps and fittings can corrode causing continuous dripping. Here is just a sample list of what can be affected by hard water.
The good news is that you can do something about it! You don’t have to shower and bathe in untreated hard water piped to your house. You can treat water hardness efficiently and without chemicals, salt or electricity.
The Solution
Softerwater Conditioners has a range of options for treating hard water problems in your home. From showers, washing machines, dishwashers, swimming pools, and evaporative air conditioners, there isn’t much we can’t do. We also have options for your water filters and UV system. There is even a system for your caravan or RV!
Installation is simple and we recommend the following;
Whole House Conditioner & Appliance Protection for Hot Water Heaters
We recommend that a licensed plumber install these. Depending on the location and access to the underground pipe, a normal installation will take about an hour. It’s best to get a quote from your local plumber. The ideal installation location would be after the water meter and before the first garden tap or any irrigation junction. This allows for all the water used in the home, around the garden, and the water used to wash your car, boat or caravan to be conditioned.
Washing Machines & Dishwashers
You can do this or pay a handyman or plumber to do the installation. It only takes two or three minutes.
- First turn off the water supply to the machine and unscrew the hose from the tap.
- Make sure the rubber washer is inserted in the conditioner and screw the conditioner to the tap.
- Grab the end of the hose and screw the hose to the conditioner and tighten slightly.
- Turn the water back on slowly and make sure there is no leak. If there is a leak, tighten the fittings and then check again. If you move homes take the conditioner with you.
Showers
Showerhead
You can do this or pay a handyman or plumber to do the installation
- Unscrew the showerhead from the wall.
- Get the Showersoft conditioner and make sure the washer is in place. Screw the Showersoft to the spigot sticking out the wall and tighten slightly.
- Grab the showerhead and screw it to the male end of the conditioner.
- All done. Just remember to squeegee the shower glass down after you shower.
Shower Hose & Handle
You can do this or pay a handyman or plumber to do the installation
- Unscrew the shower hose fitting from the wall.
- Get the Showersoft conditioner and make sure the washer is in place and screw the Showersoft to the spigot sticking out the wall and tighten slightly.
- Grab the end of the shower hose and screw it to the male end of the conditioner.
- All done. Just remember to squeegee the shower glass down after you shower.
Swimming Pools
If you’re a handy person you can do the installation yourself. If not, get your local pool guy to do the installation for you.
- The best location for the pool conditioner is after the pump and either before the filter, or if you have a salt water chlorinator, install it after the filter and before the chlorinator.
- The pool conditioner will need to be glued in place. Allow a couple of hours after the installation before turning the pool pump on again.
Installing the conditioner in the recirculating system means that each time the water is recirculated it gets conditioned time and time again.
Evaporative Air Conditioner
You can do this one yourself. If you’re scared of heights, pay your local service agent to do the installation for you. Once on the roof, the installation should only take twenty minutes or so.
- You will need two hose tails and clamps to suit the diameter of poly pipe being used in the evaporative air conditioner. Using some thread tape screw the hose tails into either end of the conditioner.
- Once you have removed the sides from the air conditioner, locate the pipe running from the pump to the branch lone at the top of the conditioner.
- Measure how much pipe to cut out, cut the pipe, and then insert the hose tails and fasten the hose clamps.
- Put the pads back on and turn on the evaporative air conditioner.
Installing the conditioner in the recirculating system means that each time the water is recirculated it gets conditioned time and time again.
UV Systems
All UV lamps are housed in a quartz sleeve so that there is no contact with the UV lamp and water. UV systems rely on the UV rays penetrating from the middle of the UV system to the internal edge of the stainless steel UV housing. Scale left to build up on the quartz sleeve will reduce the penetrating effect of the UV system to the point where the UV rays simply can’t penetrate past the scale. This renders the UV useless and most importantly leaves bacteria and viruses in your drinking and bathing water!
Installing a Softerwater Conditioner on the inlet to the UV will mitigate scale build up on the quartz sleeve. This allows the UV rays to penetrate deep into the water stream killing all bacteria and viruses.
Installation would be best carried out by a licensed plumber. Depending on the size and flow rate of the system may, it may take one to two hours. Ask your local plumber for a quote before getting started.
